Bismuth subsalicylate is an over-the-counter medication used to treat diarrhea, heartburn, and upset stomach. It is also used to prevent traveler’s diarrhea. Bismuth subsalicylate is an insoluble salt of salicylic acid linked to trivalent bismuth cation. Each molecule of bismuth subsalicylate contains 58% bismuth and 42% salicylate by weight.
Bismuth subsalicylate works by several mechanisms:
- It is an antacid that neutralizes stomach acid.
- It is a salicylate, which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
- It forms a protective layer on the lining of the stomach and intestines.
- It inhibits the production of prostaglandins, which are chemicals that can cause inflammation and diarrhea.
Bismuth subsalicylate is available in tablet, capsule, and liquid forms. The usual dose for adults is 262 to 525 milligrams every hour or two, up to four doses per day. Children should take half the adult dose.
Bismuth subsalicylate is generally safe for most people. However, it can cause some side effects, such as black tongue, constipation, and dark stools. It should not be used by people with kidney disease or those who are allergic to salicylates.
Here are some additional information about bismuth subsalicylate:
- It is the active ingredient in Pepto-Bismol.
- It is not recommended for pregnant women or breastfeeding women.
- It should not be used for more than 14 days without talking to a doctor.
- It can interact with other medications, so be sure to tell your doctor about all the medications you are taking.
